Chapter Ten

Could it really be that easy? For the next few days, I walked around with a happy smile on my face that was slowly but surely starting to annoy the people around me.

I felt sorry for the cashier working long hours, or the restaurateur I met with for my consulting gig—but I couldn’t help it.

It was all about Zoe, and her dream in which for some magical, inexplicable reason I’d gotten a starring role.

We were moving forward. I had offered to help with the hiring of additional staff we’d need, and a couple of old connections came through. We met with Judy in the restaurant where some of the artwork was already up, and spread the documents the designer had sent all over the biggest table.

I watched Zoe take in the design, her reading glasses about to slip down her nose. I wanted to kiss her all the time now, but given that her mother was with us, I restrained myself. Not that I thought she’d mind. I was sure she was well aware of what was going on around her.

“This is a beautiful design,” she said, and I could only agree. Instead of going with an image of well-known statues, they had gone with a drawing, the two women representing the Goddess of love the restaurant was named after, Venus, the Roman version, and Aphrodite, her Greek equivalent. Both were dressed, their gazes turned to each other…but the reference was unmistakable, both traditional and updated for a modern day family restaurant, because that’s what it was. Zoe and Judy felt like family to me. I wished I could have met Grandma Estelle who had put all of this in motion.

Venus and Aphrodite would also appear on the menus and the marketing material.

“It is,” I said. “By the way, I made some calls, and I found a few people who will be helping us out in the kitchen. They are okay with part time too, for the beginning.”

“Thank you so much. This is a big help.” Zoe smiled at me, and I got distracted for a moment. One thing that irresistibly drew me to her—she was more genuine than anyone I’d ever known. No games, no secrets—she had come out right away and told me she’d seen the video, and what she thought about it. She had made it clear that she wanted me for Venus & Aphrodite even when I couldn’t make up my mind…and it hadn’t taken long for clarity on another subject. No matter what shortcomings of mine I revealed to her, she still wanted me.

A miracle.

I would have enough to do in the near future, but there was something else I wanted to run by her when we spent some more time alone. Zoe had brought up the subject herself, but quickly dropped it and never mentioned it again. I, on the other hand, had been thinking about it more and more.

This was her project, her dream, and I didn’t want to take away from it.
